I had a visit from an old friend last week, Jan Rehula. Jan is a Czech triathlon legend, Olympic medallist and winner of more triathlons than I can remember. Jan has a couple of degrees in sports science and some years ago made an insightful comment about triathlon during a conversation about managing the conficting demands of work, family and training. “To be successful in Triathlon, an athlete needs to realise that Triathlon is made up of 5 activities, not 3 and that the other 2; sleeping and stretching, have the highest priority”. He is now coach of the Korean Tri team and has decided that training with his athletes is the best way to keep them and himself in shape. Jan is making a comeback after several years away from the sport and came in fresh from a 2nd place in the Pro category of the Australian Long Course Championships. Pictured below is one of his charges, Choi Jae Hun. |
Jae Hun is new to triathlon having converted from Pentathlon and has just earned a place in the start list for the Triathlon World Cup. I hadn’t seen Jan for some time and with several changes of bike, shoe and equipment sponsors in the intervening period, his bike position had ‘drifted’ so there was some work to do. The major mods were a drop in seat height, a more rearward cleat position and correcting his feet in both cycling and running shoes.
It was Jae Hun’s first visit here and the screen on my trainer tells me has a high quality engine that ran more smoothly when we finished the session than when we had started.. He is finding triathlon quite a change from the equestrian, fencing, shooting, swimming and running events comprising the modern Pentathlon.
Jan, wife Marcela, son little Jan and Jae Hun are on a road trip to Mooloolaba for the eventthere this week end. Jan is looking into running training camps in Australia at Falls Creek in the Victorian Alps. Falls Creek is atop a 33kms climb on one side and a very steep 16km climb on the other side, so athletes will get a workout in one of the most beautiful areas in Oz overseen by one of the more knowledgeable tri coaches who has done it all as a competitor. If you are interested in training with Jan or are someone who has lost touch with him, Jan can be contacted here.
Best of luck to Jan and Jae Hun at Mooloolaba
