As of Feb. 14, 2022, we no longer offer subscriptions and new content will be rare. Please see here for details. In the place of subscriptions, we now have 60-day memberships available.
Jason and I started this site in April 2011 with the modest goal of 5,000 page views a month. The interest in my take on bike fitting has exceeded those expectations significantly. Sometimes we get that many page views and more a day!
All of which is nice but I’m struggling to keep up with the correspondence generated via the Comments at the bottom of each post to the point where I get up at 2 and 3 a.m. to answer Comments and have done for months. I can no longer sustain this.
To that end, the blog part of the site as it stands on 26th November 2011 will stay up. There is enough info there for a methodical, motivated person to solve or make significant progress in solving issues with their bike position and for bike fitters to do the same for their clients. For future posts, the site will be a subscription site and offer Prime memberships. This is how it will work:
- There will be an annual subscription fee of $25 AUD. Either no one will pay it and I’ll get some sleep OR enough will pay it to allow me to do less bike fitting during the day. That will leave me time for more writing and answering of Comments from subscribers. If the latter, I’ll still get more sleep anyway.
- If you attempt to leave a Comment on the non-subscription part of the site, you’ll notice most Comment threads have been closed. Comments regarding past posts will only be answered in the subscription side via the Prime Q&A page along with other queries. The Comment sections of subscription-only posts will only be open to Prime members.
- I have read with interest the replies to “What Do You Want To Read About” and have planned posts for subscribers on the topics mentioned. Yes, with more video examples as that seems to be a common wish. Three new posts are available to subscribers now with more coming.
- Future posts will appear in view as a short summary. When subscribers click on the post link they will be taken to the complete post. When non-subscribers click on the post link they will be taken to a post preview with a link back to here.
- I hope those reading this can understand my position. The product we have greatest demand for is free advice. For years I’ve done my best to meet that demand but can no longer continue to do as I have done. There aren’t enough hours in the day.
Think you for your continued support of the site! To subscribe to the site and become a Prime member for $25 AUD, please press the button below:
Note: Often, more specific answers to your questions can be found in the Comments below or in the eBooks section and FAQ page.

cheers
d
Yes, it is a recurring annual subscription that can be cancelled at any time. Thanks for requesting clarification.
Totally fair! Subscription is definitely on my plans!
Great site, and charging for your info is surely fair.
I’ve signed up to the prime member section, but don’t seem to be able to comment on older posts. Is this right, or is it me being dim witted?
My comment was on knee alignment, which was when trying to align the knees with the foot, should it be in line at the top of the pedal stroke, or at full extension, or both.
I’ve had a guy with knee reconstructive surgery, and we have made big improvements to hip knee foot alignment, but at the top of the stroke he is still slightly knee out. Although at the bottom of the stroke we have him bang on.
He was drifting more than 10cm out to start, and we have him down to around 3cm now. We got this done due to all of your brilliant advice on this site.
I no longer sleep at night due to reading every article on here!
G’day Andrew,
I’m glad that the info has been helpful. Re the Comments issue, this is something that Jason, our behind the scenes guy, is working on now and we should have a means to do so in the near future. You won’t be able to comment on older posts as there was no means to do so for subscription readers only. As you can see, I am trying to reduce my email writing workload. I’m happy to answer subscriber queries though and we are looking at having a Comments section for any pre existing post or other matter on the subscription side.
Re your guy who is knee out at the top on one side. There is a finite number of solutions only.
Long term – have him sort out his hip, lower back and pelvic issues that are the reasons for this.
Short term – move the foot further out from the centre line.
When this happens on one side only, in many cases the rider is sitting forward on the seat with the opposite hip. With most of the remainder, they are getting close to a hip replacement.
Only thing I miss from the re-work is the updated comments on the right side … that helped me keep up. Otherwise, I had no issue in paying … well worth it.
G’day Craig,
The only way we could do that was to block the entire site
to non subscribers and I didn’t want to do that for a host of reasons.
Craig and Steve,
You’ll be happy to know, I’ve added it to the Prime Q&A page.
Jason – you are the man – I wish I could get service like this in other parts of my life!
No problem, Craig… I had planned on trying to figure out a way to do it, but your comment reminded me.
I paid a subscription and still didn’t get an answer to a reasonable ‘bike fit’ question. Steve also ignored a subsequent email. In an earlier comment, I gently disagreed (even that is overstating it) with one of his comments. I think my lack of sycophancy must have presented a ‘material challenge’ to this chaps mental state. I have subsequently learned that he is steadily building a reputation for becoming increasingly difficult.
In his stated rationale for starting the “Prime” subscription service, he suggests that he will have more time to answer questions because there will naturally be far less questions to answer, once people have to pay. It is therefore reasonable to assume that your questions will be answered if you pay. Not so.
There is a lot of information available on this site but in my opinion none of it is proprietary. A quick scan of professional discussion groups (not the bike fit/bike blog community) will reveal that much of the information that is being pompously presented as “breakthrough” is regurgitated common knowledge. My best guess is that his ego has now got the better of him and he has started to overreach with his half baked theories about heavy metals in Specialized wedges and patents for faux-science measuring techniques sans rigour or proper protocol. There is also an element of Barnum and Bailey about his heel wedge promotion. Read his many heel wedge (articles, claims and comments) carefully and you will find that he often contradicts some of his more material claims. I don’t suppose there is anything sinister in this – just a classic case of an overenthusiastic salesman straying into charlatan territory. These heel wedges have been met with incredulity by most of his potential distribution chain but by all means buy them if you also believe in the latest diet pills. However, be aware that his oft touted 80% number is just plain silliness. It will help ‘some’ people
G’day Flash,
I’ll try hard to be more temperate than you have been. You have made a number of comments about me that I don’t agree with. To simplify the task, I have answered your various comments in BOLD below in your text.
I paid a subscription and still didn’t get an answer to a reasonable ‘bike fit’ question. NOT SO . i RECEIVED YOUR QUESTION ON JANUARY 4TH AND ANSWERED IT THE SAME DAY. IT HAS BEEN POSTED SINCE THEN. Steve also ignored a subsequent email. ALSO NOT SO. I’VE BEEN OUT OF EMAIL CONTACT FOR 5 AND HALF DAYS AT A TRAINING CAMP. IT IS NOW LESS THAN AN HOUR SINCE I’VE WALKED IN MY FRONT DOOR AND IN THAT TIME I HAVE ANSWERED YOUR LAST QUESTION ONLY TO FIND THIS ONE. In an earlier comment, I gently disagreed (even that is overstating it) with one of his comments. I think my lack of sycophancy must have presented a ‘material challenge’ to this chaps mental state.YOU KNOW NOTHING OF MY MENTAL STATE AND SO ARE NOT QUALIFIED TO COMMENT. I TOOK NO OFFENSE AT YOUR DISAGREEMENT OF ANY KIND AS MY ANSWER CLEARLY SHOWS I have subsequently learned that he is steadily building a reputation for becoming increasingly difficult. HOW?
In his stated rationale for starting the “Prime” subscription service, he suggests that he will have more time to answer questions because there will naturally be far less questions to answer, once people have to pay. It is therefore reasonable to assume that your questions will be answered if you pay. Not so. SO YOU ARE UPSET THAT I WENT AWAY FOR 5 DAYS AND LEFT YOUR QUESTION UNANSWERED. WHEN YOU ARE ON HOLIDAYS AS I AM, HAVE YOU EVER LEFT AN EMAIL UNANSWERED FOR A PERIOD?
IF YOU ANSWER YES, THEN YOU SHOULD BE MORE UNDERSTANDING. IF YOU ANSWER NO, I’M SORRY; I CAN’T LIVE UP TO THE STANDARD YOU SET.
There is a lot of information available on this site but in my opinion none of it is proprietary. A quick scan of professional discussion groups (not the bike fit/bike blog community) will reveal that much of the information that is being pompously presented as “breakthrough” is regurgitated common knowledge. I’LL HAVE TO TAKE YOUR OPINION ON THIS AS I DON’T SPEND TIME LOOKING AT PROFESSIONAL DISCUSSION GROUPS. I READ WIDELY AND FIT A LOT OF PEOPLE. THE INFO ON THE SITE IS THE PRODUCT OF BOTH EXPERIENCES My best guess is that his ego has now got the better of him and he has started to overreach with his half baked theories about heavy metals in Specialized wedges and patents for faux-science measuring techniques sans rigour or proper protocol. I’M GLAD THAT YOU DON’T GUESS VERY WELL. FUNNILY ENOUGH FLASH, I’VE BEEN VISITED BY A GENT WHO SPENDS MOST OF HIS TIME TRAINING BG FITTERS. I SHOWED HIM WHAT HAPPENS TO HIS PELVIS WHEN IN PROXIMITY TO SPECIALIZED WEDGES AND FOUND NO ARGUMENT FROM HIM. HE HAS FIRST HAD KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT HAPPENS HERE, YOU DON’T, SO PLEASE CONFINE YOUR STATEMENTS TO WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT. There is also an element of Barnum and Bailey about his heel wedge promotion. Read his many heel wedge (articles, claims and comments) carefully and you will find that he often contradicts some of his more material claims. PLEASE TELL ME WHERE. I WENT TO THE TROUBLE AND SUBSTANTIAL FINANCIAL COST OF DEVELOPING HEEL WEDGES BECAUSE IN MY OPINION, WHICH I AM HAPPY TO HAVE YOU DISAGREE WITH, THERE IS A NEED. I don’t suppose there is anything sinister in this – just a classic case of an overenthusiastic salesman straying into charlatan territory. These heel wedges have been met with incredulity by most of his potential distribution chain but by all means buy them if you also believe in the latest diet pills. WHAT POTENTIAL DISTRIBUTION CHAIN. I HAVE APPROACHED NO ONE TO DISTRIBUTE THEM. However, be aware that his oft touted 80% number is just plain silliness. It will help ‘some’ people BE ACCURATE, THE ‘OFT TOUTED NUMBER’ IS 85% NOT 80%.
NOW WE BOTH HAD OUR SAY, WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?
IN YOUR ORIGINAL MAIL YOU ENDED WITH THE COMMENT ” By the way, I have learned more fit information from your site than I have in 20 years of bike mag subscriptions and two disasterous bike fit sessions (Specialized system).”
I DON’T KNOW WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN YOUR LIFE IN THE LAST 5 DAYS SINCE YOU WROTE THAT BUT I HOPE YOU ARE ABLE TO FIND SOME HAPPINESS SOON.

I told one of the guys in my club who is a teachng osteopath. He scoffed at the notion. Just for laughs, we tried it and of course we found that it wasn’t true. Some of the guys in my club work for Specialized Europe (their HQ is 2 miles away). They are annoyed by your preposterous suggestion and will send out the appropriate enquiries. Your “proof” consists of nothing more than unsubstantiated pseudo science. Name your sources and prove that the proper protocols and peer reviews have been undertaken. Enough of the “some bloke said” type of proof. I’m calling bullshit on your claim
“BE ACCURATE, THE ‘OFT TOUTED NUMBER’ IS 85% NOT 80%”
Very childish. OK, so your nonsense is 5% worse than I quoted. Heel wedges will not solve more cycling related fit problems than cleat wedges. Only a fool would argue otherwise. End of story
“I HAVE APPROACHED NO ONE TO DISTRIBUTE THEM”
If you say so!
“I DON’T KNOW WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN YOUR LIFE IN THE LAST 5 DAYS SINCE YOU WROTE THAT BUT I HOPE YOU ARE ABLE TO FIND SOME HAPPINESS SOON”
That’s the sort of pre-packaged, trite comment I’d expect from a teenage girl with a penchant for agony columns. The truth is I just don’t like you. I was told that you were a bit of a preening, difficult sort (but that you were a good bike fitter) so I was extra nice to you to make sure I got an answer to my questions. I thought your answers were suspiciously weak, so I combed through your site and became agitated that I’d paid a subscription to someone who is in my opinion a charlatan.
On another part of your blog, you claimed (in answer to my question) to have not noticed that crank flex causes the angle of the pedal to alter (with implications for shimming). I could take that two ways. Either you are not as observant as claimed or you realise that this event has negative implications for your so called patent application (there’s not much point in claiming to have an exact method for measuring the amount of correction required if it is rendered useless by an event that you have studiously ignored). Where did you submit this patent?
You claimed to have posted your previous comment in the spirit of honesty. I suspect you just wanted some of your more sycophantic shills to do your dirty work for you. Now, in the spirit of honesty, post my reply.
Okay Flash,
In the spirit of honesty, here goes. I’m happy for anyone to
disagree with me on any subject they choose, and I will argue my case with them in public view. In answering your comments made in other posts, I’ve responded genuinely and politely. You’ve chosen to do otherwise and have questioned my mental state, honesty and more.
I’ve posted this because I’m happy to post the opinion of anyone who constructively disagrees with anything that I’ve said………… with the emphasis on “*constructively*”. Your comments are not constructive. The best advice ever given to me regarding people who act as you do is “*Do not feed the troll*”.
So take your troll like comments and post them somewhere else. They will no longer be accepted here
Hello Steve, I want to compliment you on the moderation you showed in your answer to Flash (nomen est omen). You have been given so much help and information to so many individuals for years for free. Which was generous, and with the amount of sleep it has robbed you off, clearly overgenerous. About time that you get some payment for what is to very many people very valuable information, helping them to ride with more comfort on their bikes.
leo
G’day Leo,
Long time no speak. Happy New Year to you and I hope life in
the Netherlands is good. My comments might be moderate, but with people like Flash, sometimes it is through gritted teeth. Thanks for your support.
