COMFORT + EFFICIENCY = PERFORMANCE

Last Updated on June 30, 2017 by stevehoggbikefitting.com

Meet Jerry Gerlich. Jerry is the skinny bloke standing between the good looking gents on either side. Jerry is from Austin, Texas, U.S.A. and works as a bike fitter at Castle Hill Cycles in Austin. Castle Hill Cycles is part of the larger Castle HIll Fitness gym complex owned by his best friend, the late Paolo Minissi.

Jerry and I have been exchanging emails since 2008 and met twice in 2009. Jerry visited here for a week and then we met up again at Interbike. Since we started talking Jerry has always made sense to me. Not that many people in the bike fitting world do, which is probably as much my fault as theirs. He has a degree in Kinesiology (which in Australia would be called Sports Science and Human Movement) and has worked as a personal trainer and bike fitter for many years with his major focus being the rehab’ing of difficult cases.

Cutting to the chase, Jerry has just finished 3 weeks of training here. Of the applications we get, less than 10% end with me saying ‘yes’. Of those, a lesser number complete the 3 weeks successfully. Training here was as hard on me as it was for Jerry. Intense is a better word. I thought he was going to faint at one stage when he made a personal breakthrough with one of the techniques he learned, which not everyone has the aptitude to apply. I’ve been referring people to Jerry since not long after he and I first started talking. I’ve done this because Jerry is humble, knowledgeable and empathic. He’s also a high quality bike fitter.

Jerry didn’t come here to learn bike fitting. He didn’t need to. Jerry came here to learn some of the outside of mainstream techniques that we use here. Those techniques are the difference between a good result and a great result for a fit client.

Jerry is open for business and has my personal recommendation. This is not something I give lightly. For anyone in Texas or contemplating visiting Texas, learn more about Jerry here.

  1. Good job Jerry!  Though my recommendation means significantly less, I concur with Steve.  Looking forward to seeing you back in Austin soon.

    1. G’day Craig,
As I write this, he’s somewhere over the Pacific on his way
back to Austin. We’re both worn out so give him a day or two to recover when he returns. Your recommendation means a lot Craig. That’s because you are a happy customer of Jerry’s.

  2. Yes – or deaf!!!  I agree though, that is quite the thing.  I won’t be able to see him for 3 weeks at least (my middle daughter is getting married in 3 weeks so my world is chaos right now!)

  3. Thanks Craig/Steve. Looking forward to applying Steve’s techniques. Craig, let’s plan on late September for a fitting session as my schedule is already beginning to stack up. Made it to Las Vegas. 4 hours until I hit Austin. Thanks again Steve.

  4. More than just a fit

My wife and I invested in fit sessions with Jerry G. in Austin, Texas.  What makes our fit session a little different is that we were fit on a tandem.   In the six years since purchasing our first tandem the big bike has slowly replaced the singles that we previously rode.  We still own singles and ride them from time to time but now we ride the tandem at 99% of the time.   So we packed up our tandem and made the trek from Fort Worth to Austin for our back to back fitting sessions.

Jerry’s passion for bike fitting became evident as soon aswe met.  He spent a quite a bit of time first doing physical evaluations and then remediating some of the results of 35 years of office work.

It turned out there were no drastic adjustments to our on the bike positions.  The most dramatic improvement was a change to the wedging in our shoes and we now both feel much more solid on the pedals.    We may be atypical in this since I have been reading Steve’s writings for years and attempting to adjust our positions.

It was a long day for the three of us but well worth the time and effort.   As part of the fit Jerry sent us personalized exercise programs to increase our general functionality.   He took the time to explain our physical challenges and we are sold on the importance of doing our homework off the bike.

Thanks Jerry for your time and effort.

    Wayne & Karen

    1. G’day Wayne,
I’m a bit of a Jerry fan too. Thank you very much for taking the time to provide feedback. We all need the occasional filip and it is metaphorical pats on the head like this that make quality bike fitting so rewarding.

    2. Hi Wayne,

Glad to hear things are working out for both you and Karen. That was definitely a long session.  Tandems are always a bit of an adventure.  Your attention to Steve’s writings over the years was the reason we only made minor changes to the tandem position.  Good luck with the new positions and stick with the exercise programs.

      Cheers,
      Jerry
