Jason’s Seven Axiom SL
I toyed around with the idea of getting a new frame from a few custom builders, but I always knew I wanted a Seven Axiom SL even before working with Steve and discovering he had one, too. Knowing Steve had an Axiom SL and rated it very highly just made the decision that more reassuring. So, I asked Steve to design a frame for me and sent it on to Seven through my local bike shop and waited… The magic of my bike being created is documented below (special thanks to Seven’s Karl Borne for the photos):
The new frame arrived at the bike shop a few weeks after the order was put in, and I could hardly wait to build it up. However, first, I had to just take a few moments to admire and marvel at the amazing craftsmanship that produced such a beautiful titanium frame with perfect welds. I soon proceeded to ignore my family and began putting it all together, and it turned out something like this:
When I worked with Steve and Seven, I told them I wanted a bike that could handle the rough roads in Southern Illinois but still allow me to climb without much wasted effort. The bike had to be able to handle my commute to work and a fast group ride every now and then. The end result was everything that I had hoped for… I want to say it’s silky smooth, but that takes away from the liveliness of it. The best way I’ve been able to describe it is it’s like an electric glide. It turns the grind of chip seal roads, so common where I live, into roads that almost feel paved.
Steve attributed some of the comfort of my frame to the longer chainstays he engineered into its design to help better distribute my weight. The weight distribution also helped achieve a nice, neutral steering bike which gives confidence in all situations. Plus, the master builders at Seven picked titanium tubes from their seemingly infinite selection that matched my weight and riding style, and double-butted them to near perfection to give me a bike that was both light and stiff enough for the most serious climbs.
