COMFORT + EFFICIENCY = PERFORMANCE

Cleat position

As a new rider at 55 years old, I assumed that having sore knees at the end of a long, hard ride was a result of the effort I had put in. I tend to push big gears and am not much of a “spinner.” After a few hours, my knees always settled down and I was right to go again. After about five years like this with the cleats in a mid adjustment position I made changes.

Always being keen to experiment I wanted to improve my climbing and moved my cleat position further to the rear of my shoes to see if that would help put more leverage on my pedals.

I can’t say for sure that my climbing improved but my knee pain completely disappeared! Apparently you can ride pain free! So I can now see how important these “minor” adjustments can be. Incidentally, I’m 6-foot, 2-inches tall and ride approx 250 kilometres per week and now 61 years old.

G’day Rene,

Pain should never be part of the ‘normal’ riding experience. I’m very happy for you that applying the information you’ve found here has worked for your benefit. Enjoy the ride!
