These are the original Steve Hogg Shims. 70 percent of riders have a functional or measurable difference in leg length. This doesn’t allow both legs to be equally fluent and powerful unless the difference is compensated for by shimming the cleat of the shorter leg. The Custom Option is when you know exactly what shim stack you need. The size you choose will be supplied with screws of the correct length for that shim and an instruction sheet. Options available range from 2mm to 12mm in single mm increments with prices ranging from AUD $17.60 to AUD $47.30. We manufacture shims in 2 and 3mm thicknesses. As an example, if you order a custom shim of 8mm what you will receive is 2 x 3mm shims and 1 x 2mm shim with the correct length fixing screws for an 8mm shim stack. Shims for Speedplay cleats can be supplied with screw lengths to suit V1, V2 cleats on request. Walkable cleat compatible screws are supplied as standard.
Note: If a shim of more than 10mm is necessary, Steve recommends the use of Speedplay Zero, X series or Light Action pedals exclusively for road use. Here’s why:
Shim stacks larger than 10mm can be problematic because multiple shims require long fixing bolts that are only engaged in a few mm of thread. The shim stack can come loose unless tightened hard and often. This is not as secure as we would like with large shim stacks. The solution is a fitting we manufacture named Speedplay Extender Plate Plus 5. It is similar to the Speedplay part no. 13330 but instead of being the 3mm depth of a standard Speedplay baseplate, it is 8mm deep. So it is a 5mm shim in itself and has 8mm of thread engagement potential. That solves the security problem. The other problem that it solves is that of Rocking Torque. With a large shim stack the foot is much further from the pedal and there is a greater effort required of the rider to stabilise the foot on the pedal. This is why all manufacturers have reduced the overall height of their pedal and cleat systems over the last 30 years. The solution to this problem is to move the shimmed cleat further rearward until if ‘feels’ the same as the non shimmed leg. The Speedplay Extender Plate Plus 5 is CNC machined from high quality aluminum alloy and allows for up to 14mm further rearward cleat adjustment than a standard Speedplay baseplate. The Plus 5’s are $70 each and then you need to add the cost of the shim stack, and potentially, a pair of Speedplay pedals (see Stop Press below). If you need a shim stack of more than 20mm contact us for advice at info AT stevehoggbikefitting DOT com.
